Summary of updating effortsA major round of updates and additions was completed in June 2003, as described below in "Major changes between 2nd edition and version 2.5."

I plan major updates and other improvements to this site, based on a three-week visit to Hawaii in late May/early June 2005 and another visit in January 2009, for a new version 3.0 of this site. Illnesses and workload, and extensive travel after my June 2011 retirement (not yet to Hawaii) delayed the main part of the update project (adding a few hundred more photos, and many more pages, to the photo collection), but I would like to get that out of the way sometime in 2013.

Major changes from C.C. Slater's original Hawaii State Highways siteMost of these changes were phased in beginning in October 1999.
-- Site renamed, to reflect site's expanded coverage of all highways in Hawaii, not just those in the state highway system.
-- Route lists were expanded to include and identify numbered county highways and some other significant roads not in the state highway system, as well as links to Mapquest zoomable online maps for each island. Some historical information was also added to the route lists, including both former numbered routes and old numbers for existing routes (which still persist on some maps, and some of the old route shields still can be seen on roadsides). Also added were comments on quality of route signage (some routes have little or no route signage), and cautions on road conditions. In addition, the larger route lists were split into two (Oahu, Maui) or three (Big Island) tables on separate, linked pages.
-- The Oahu Freeways exit guides, formerly separate from the Hawaii State Highways site, were fully integrated into the Hawaii Highways site. They were changed to provide separate columns with exit information for each direction of travel. In addition, the exit guides added entries for left exits onto the "zipper lane" on Interstate H-1 (barrier-separated, eastbound- and morning rush-only HOV-3 lanes between exits 7 and the airport, creating a temporary HOV-3 eastbound lane out of two westbound lanes). Finally, each of Oahu's four freeways got its own separate exit guide page.
-- An extensive road photos collection (then with over 150 photos on 15 pages, from all six of the major Hawaiian islands), and links to photos on other sites (such as Mark Furqueron's Hawaii road photos page, and the Hawaii DOT site), were also added.
