Kihei- Upcountry Maui Highway |
JN Haleakala Highway Haliimaile Road west of Pukalani, south to JN Piilani Highway at Kaonoulu Street in Kihei; would indirectly reconnect separate Piilani Highway segments in south Maui and in east Maui, allowing travel between south Maui coast and upcountry east Maui (and in particular, military facilities both in Kihei and atop the Haleakala volcano) without a lengthy detour through Kahului; final environmental impact statement approved, but there is no firm date for construction or completion of the project |

Haleakala Crater Road |
JN Haleakala Crater Road at Haleakala National Park boundary, to parking lot below Red Hill summit (summit elevation 10023 feet, parking lot just above 10000 feet) |
11.3 miles |
Photos |
Steep, slow, and winding. Descend in low gear to avoid brake failure.
Also, most mornings the parking lots near the summit are crowded with tourists there to watch the sunrise; many of them ride bicycles downhill afterwards. Park officials encourage visitors to go up to view the sunset, rather than sunrise, to avoid the crowds. (That also has the advantage of not having to wake up at 2am or 3am to make the long, slow trip up the mountain in time for sunrise.) |
(part) |
Dairy Road |
JN Keolani Place and Haleakala Highway in Kahului (1 block north of JN Hana Highway), south to JN Puunene Avenue, and Kuihelani Highway; four lanes with many at-grade intersections, and lots of traffic to and from the numerous businesses lining the road; part of former route 38; most or all of this segment used to be a private road, but ca. 1971 state "arranged for public use" of Dairy Road (unclear whether ownership was ever transferred), as a "temporary" measure pending construction (still not started, more than three decades later) of Airport Access Extension bypass |

Olinda Road (part) |
JN Baldwin Avenue and Makawao Avenue in downtown Makawao, to JN Olinda Road at Piiholo Road southeast of Makawao (while route officially ends there, route 390 milemarker 12 is located on the short stub of Olinda Road southeast of that intersection); no route signs (except at JN Makawao Avenue), but milemarkers indicate route number, and two route markers at eastern end reflect route 39 former number; part of former route 39; does not appear in 1960s Hawaii DOT planning documents, but is in 1981 Maui county route log, and on 1976 Maui County planning map |
5.1 miles |
Hawaii DOT considered in the early 1960s a substantial relocation of this highway, to move its western end to Pukalani rather than Makawao, and to connect its eastern end to what is now Haleakala Crater Road near the national park entrance. However, these plans apparently were abandoned by the mid-1960s, and did not appear in a 1967 Hawaii DOT major planning document. |

Airport Access Extension (Hookele Street?) |
Kahului Airport boundary, south to JN Kuheilani Highway Puunene Avenue Mokulele Highway; this bypass of Dairy Road has been planned at least since the early 1970s; according to a 2012 environmental assessment, part of route north of Hana Highway to be designed and built by HDOT's Airports Division, rather than its Highways Division; limited-access, but with at-grade intersections; newly-completed Hookele Street, about 1.0 miles long between Mokulele Highway and Hana Highway, parallels proposed Airport Access Extension, but appears not to be part of project, and there are no route markers, milemarkers, or other indication that Hookele Street is currently state-maintained or part of a state highway |
