The Maui route list is in two tables:

Table 1 (preceding page) covers existing primary highways on Maui (routes 30-37), and some related highways

Table 2 (below) covers the remaining routes

.State route 440 State route; County route 490 County route; Former state route 15Former county route 430 Former route; No route number Other unnumbered route
(Actual county route shields are usually identical to state shields; see the FAQs for how routes are classified in the listings below.
Also, in many browsers letting your mouse linger over a route number graphic will help you decipher it.)

Routes are generally listed in numerical order, with some exceptions to group portions of the same road, or its former alignments, with different names and/or numbers. For lists ordered differently (alphabetical by name, or by former route number):

Photos Steep, slow, and winding. Descend in low gear to avoid brake failure.

Also, most mornings the parking lots near the summit are crowded with tourists there to watch the sunrise; many of them ride bicycles downhill afterwards. Park officials encourage visitors to go up to view the sunset, rather than sunrise, to avoid the crowds. (That also has the advantage of not having to wake up at 2am or 3am to make the long, slow trip up the mountain in time for sunrise.)

Hawaii DOT considered in the early 1960s a substantial relocation of this highway, to move its western end to Pukalani rather than Makawao, and to connect its eastern end to what is now State route 378 Haleakala Crater Road near the national park entrance. However, these plans apparently were abandoned by the mid-1960s, and did not appear in a 1967 Hawaii DOT major planning document.
